Do you have a blog? If the answer is YES. Read on. Or if you’ve always wanted to start one, now’s the time! This is a challenge that will help increase awareness and acceptance of Down syndrome.
It’s called the 31 for 21 Blog Challenge. October is Down syndrome awareness month. There are 31 days in October. Down syndrome is caused by having an extra 21st chromosome, so hence the number 21. 31 for 21! This is an EASY and great way to spread the word about Down syndrome via social media.
OK, I know what you are thinking right now. I can’t really do 31 posts, ONE FOR EACH DAY of October! How the heck am I going to come up with ideas? WAIT. Don’t give up yet!!
Answer: yes you CAN do it. I feel the same way honestly. I feel a bit daunted. I work full time, have a very demanding office job. I run my group Stop Disability Slurs cause and just became the Social Co-Chair for a local group called LexFUN! in my town for which I am organizing the first event this Sunday.
We are ALL busy. Yeah yeah yeah. So like you, I have NO idea how I am going to do this. But I am going to put my mind to it and do it (or at least do my best). Join me?
Tip: You can blog about ANYTHING. What you had for breakfast, that cute doggy you see on the side of the street. Photos of your family (a blog can be just ONE photo people!) Random thoughts. What you think about on a daily basis….what your future dreams and goals are. We are nosy and we want to know!
And oh yeah, your thoughts about Down syndrome would be cool too (although again, this is not necessary). For example, I would love to hear from some of Julian’s fans that blog about how knowing him, either virtually or in person, has impacted your life and family.
Has this made you open your eyes to other disabilities you see around you? Both visible and invisible? Has this made you think about your OWN disabilities? In my opinion, we all have our own disabilities, they are just expressed differently.
Perhaps you aren’t “good” at communication, perhaps you aren’t the greatest at doing things with your hands, perhaps you are always clumsy. Ok, so these aren’t true disabilties but I think you catch my drift.
So this blog challenge is an easy way to talk about life and your thoughts about disabilties. Perhaps you are scared. That’s OK. So was I before Julian came into my life. If that is the case. Tell the world about it. Tell us about your fears, the reason they exist and what you would like to potentially do to change those fears. Maybe you will volunteer. Maybe you will encourage your kid when they say “what’s wrong with that kid”? And have an educated discussion that yes, s/he may be different in some ways, but s/he is like you in many ways too! Maybe you will just be more aware.
This is the time and the place to talk about your feelings about abilities AND disabilities and your own personal struggles. Maybe you know someone who has a disability personally. Maybe you don’t. Do you want to? Tell us.
Many MANY people struggle with mental illness, myself included. But they are silent. This is the time to talk about it. Or if you feel like you don’t have struggles in your life, well then, good for you! (but I would beg to differ than anyone who thinks they don’t have struggles is living in la la land, but that’s just me).
OK, I think this post is long enough. I can not WAIT for you to join me. The first step if you are thinking about blogging even just ONCE for 31 for 21 (although the more posts the better!) is to COMMENT here on this blog.
